General English Level 5 V 3
UNIT 02 The world we live in TOPIC 02 It's over there somewhere
LANGUAGE FOCUS 04 Words that sound the same
In English, there are many words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings. These are called homonyms.
Sophie says:
I can't wait to see the sea.

See and sea sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings. In this example we can tell the meaning of the sentence from the context, the other words in the sentence or paragraph.

1 Look at the words on the left. They come from the conversation in Activity 02. Listen to the conversation again if you need to hear them again.
2 Say all of the words.
3 Drag and drop each of the words on the right to match a word on the left that sounds the same.
