LANGUAGE FOCUS 08 The imperative
 
In the party invitation Tom writes:
Directions from station:
Turn left into Railway Street when you leave the station. Go straight ahead until you come to Church Street.

 

Turn and Go are the imperative form of the verb.
When we give directions we use the imperative.

Examples

Turn left into Railway Street.
Go straight ahead until you come to Church Street.
Walk to the corner.
Cross the road.
Mei says:
Oh, great. When you come out of the station you turn right into Railway Street.

 

Sometimes we put you before the verb

Example

You turn left into Church Street.
