Numbers

Cardinal numbers

Amy and Tom say
Tom:
What's your address?
Amy:
My address is apartment 4, number 6 King St, Roseville.
Tom: And what's your postcode?
Amy: 2085.
Tom: What's your telephone number?
Amy: My phone number is 9419 6782.

We call these numbers cardinal numbers.

Example

How old is he? He is twelve years old.

Ordinal numbers

Tom says to Amy
Tom:
And the date today is the third of February 2001.
 

The third is an ordinal number.

Ordinal numbers are numbers which show position: first(1st), second(2nd), third(3rd), fourth(4th)...

Example

I live on the sixth floor.
It is my grandmother's seventieth birthday today.

Dates

In English how we say dates is different to how we write them.

Amy and Tom say
Tom:
And what's your date of birth?
Amy:
It's January the twenty second, ninteen seventy eight.

On the student form Tom writes: 22.01.1978
